[Per United Press Association.] THE FOUNDERING OF THE KANGAROO. Wellington, May 6. The Steamer Kangaroo which was wrecked off Cape Campbell on Friday, is owned by the Westport Colliery, Co., and is insured in the National office for £5,500, the whole of which with the exception of £250 has been re-insured. So far as at present is known from the Wellington office of the company, £3,500 has been re-insured as follows :—New Zealand, £5OO ; South British, £5OO ; Standard, £250 ; Thames and Mersey, £500; Victoria, £750 : Equitable, £5OO ; and Union, £5OO. The re-insurances having been effected at the head office in Dunedin, the whole of the whole of the lines are not known here. The mail which was on board the steamer was also lost. No attempt will be made to rise her in consequence of the uncertain weather and strong tides generally prevailing at this spot. A preliminary enqury was held before a Collector of Customs this afternoon, but little fresh evidence was adduced. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. An old man named Alfred Harley, was found early this morning in the railway station at Woodside, Wairarapa, in an unconscious state. On examination it was found that one of his wrists was cut severely, and he was also stabbed in the left side. On regaining consciousness Harley said he had committed the deed himself, with a sheathknife which was lying at his side, no reason for the rash act is assigned. THE GOLD DISCOVERY. Ross, May 6. Several of the leading business men visited the reef yesterday, and crushed some stone there, obtaining payable gold. They brought a parcel to town and crushed it to-day in the presence of over some 40 persons, with the same result. Fifteen leases are pegged out and twenty-fourth interests are changing hands to-day at £l5. EXTENSIVE FIRE. Auckland, May 6. The residence of Paul Fouche, imagemaker, in Parnell, was burned down yesterday. The stock aud furniture were insured in the North British Office for £5OO. The house, which was owned by Mrs. Bridgen, of Wellington, was insured for £2OO in the New Zealand office. The origin of the fire is unknown. A sale of Crown Lands yesterday realised £4,565. Sportsmen complain of the scarcity of birds this season. The Rev. Spurgeon and Bishop Luck leave by the s.s. Rotomahana for Sydney, en route for Europe, to-day. Spurgeon, in wishing farewell to his congregation last night, said the new Tabernacle would cost £12,858, of which ways and means had been found, or were expected, for meeting all bnt £1,500. DESTRUCTIVE FIRE. Christchurch, May 6. A seven-roomed house in Tuam Street East, occupied by Mrs. Whitely, was burned last night. The house was insured for £l5O in the London and Lancashire Company, and the furniture for £25 in the same office. Invercargill, May 6. Sir John Ure (late Lord Provost of" Glasgow). Lady Ure, and their daughter, were passengers by the Tarawera from Melbourne, and are staying in Invercargill. DONOGHUE’S SENTENCE. Hokitika, May 6. Dissatisfaction is being expressed throughout this district at the lengthened delay attending Donoghue’s case, who was tried and sentenced to death about two months ago. A large requisition is being signed, a king the Mayor to call a public meeting, with a’view to give an expression of opinion on the subject. New Plymouth, May 6. John Burton, of Tfawcra, who was charged, at the Supreme Court, with making a false declaration with intent to defraud, pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment.
