[Per United Press Association.] NEW SCALE OF FEES. Wellington, May 2. A new scale of fees under the Resident Magistrate’s Acts and also under the Licensing Act appear in to-night’s G.vzeite. THE MISSING STEAMER. The Westport Colliery Co.’s steamer Wareatea, about which some anxiety was felt, arrived safely at Westport from Melbourne to-day. £l5O a-foot has been offering for a couple of business sites in the centre of the town. NARROW ESCAPE. A private telegram here states that the Hon. Mr. Rolleston, who is travelling overland from Canterbury to Blenheim, narrowly escaped drowning in the Wairau river. The party, it is stated, were fording the river in a buggy which capsized, and Mr. Rolleston had great difficulty in reaching the river bank. THE PREMIER'S MOVEMENTS. Major Atkinson will address the Wellington electors on Tuesday next, and will leave for Auckfand next week, where he will meet the Hon. Mr. Mitchelson. EARTHQUAKE. A slight shock of earthquake was experienced here at 8.35 last night. Direction, E. to W. THE FROZEN MEAT TRADE. . In addition to the 9,000 carcases which the Goar Company are freezing for the steamer British King, they will freeze 4,000 for the Aorangi, which leaves here direct for London. COLONIAL REVENUE. The Customs revenue for the Colony last month was £100,819 4s sd, the amount collected at the four principal centres being —Auckland: £23,528 2s 2d; Wellington: £16,292 16s Id ; Lyttelton and Christchurch, £17,840 (ri Sd; Dunedin: £29,420 Is 9d. For last March the total was £115,799 0s 3-1, and for April, 1883, it was £1.21,086 8s 3d. Tne beer duty for last month was £4,960 10s lOd, the principal amounts being—Auckland, £l,OBB 13s 2d ; Wellington, £385 12s 6d; Christchurch, £1,056 10s lOd ; Dunedin, £1,166 15s 9d. For March last it was £4,742 18s Id. For April, 1883, £5,052 7s Bd.
SUPREME COURT. New Plymouth, May 1. At the Supreme Court. William Cunningham, for indecent assault, was sentenc'd tn seven . years, The Maori case of forcible entry into a dwelling, was discharged. THE TAKAPUNA INQUIRY. Dunedin, May 2. The Takapuna Inquiry was concluded on Thursday afternoon, and judgment will be given this afternoon. The Court found that the damage to the Takapuna was caused off Cape Egmont, and was occasioned by careless navigation, through the defaalt of Captain Jones and want of experience of the second mate. DEATH FROM DROWNING. An inquest is being held on Edgar King, he was over 70 years of age, and fell in the Taciri River, when crossing the Railway Bridge with his son aged 15. It is his daughter and family who have gone to Auckland. Her husband is in England. A verdict of accidental death was returned. THE HEATHEN CHINESE. Ten cases, in which four Chinese were charged with -gambling at Tapanui. One was fined £5 55., one £2 25., and two £1 each. The declined to forfeit the gambling instruments. ROMAN CATHOLIC SYNOD. Auckland, May 2. The first synod of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Auckland, was opened to-day with great ceremony, by Bishop Luck, all the Diocese save three being present. THE N. Z. SUGAR COMPANY. The half-yearly meeting of the N. Z. Sugar Company was held to-day, the business being of a purely formal character. Mr. Murdoch, a retiring director was re-elected. Sir George Grey will probably leave for the South to-morrow. BURNT TO DEATH. A child named Young, died at Hokianga, from burns received through falling into a fire.
