[Reuter’s Telegrams.] DEFEAT OF THE REBELS. Cairo, April 18. Despatches to hand from General Gordon, at Khartoum, dated the 9th inst., announce that a prominent merchant at El Obeid reports to him that the followers of El Mahdi have been recently twice defeated by a force of loyal Arabs, and that the rebels have now surrendered. SEDITIOUS PROCLAMATIONS. Bombay, April 18. The Police in this city have effected the seizure of large quantities of a printed proclamation signed by El Mahdi, urging Musselmen to join his ranks. THE EGYPTIAN POLICY. London, April 19. It has transpired that Major Sir Evelyn Baring, Consul-General at Cairo, has been summoned to London by first mail. It is understood that the Government have now under consideration important questions relating to the state of affairs in Egypt.
