[Per United Press Association.] THE HEARTLESS CHILD DESERTION. Wellington, April 10 Margaret Weir was brought up on remand at the Resident Magistrates Court charged with the desertion of a child at Dunedin some weeks ago, whereby its health might have been permanently injured. Chief detective Brown applied for a remand to Dunedin. The application was granted. The prisoner was again admitted to bail and left in steamer for Dunedin this afternoon. In the Resident Magistrates Court judgement was given for the defendant in the case Colonial Land Settlement and Endowment Assessment Company r. Bohan. The Magistrate holding that defendants name had been placed on the register without proper authority. Notice of appeal was given and and several similar cases were adjourned awaiting the result. THE WATTY FORGERIES.—IMPORTANT POINT. A somewhat novel important point was raised in the R.M. Court to-day, L. Harris recently sued Thos. Glew for £2O, amount of promissory-note discounted. The defendant pleaded that the signature was one of Watty’s forgeries. The case was partially heard before Mr. Hardcastle R.M., and an information for perjury was laid against Glew. Then Mr. Hardcastle been invalided, the case was heard de novo by Mr. Wardell R.M., who to-day gave judgment for the plaintiff. Mr. Travers counsel for the plaintiff, pointed out that in consequence of the ill-health of Mr. Hardcastle, the parties had been put to considerable expense, it having been found necessary to commence the case afresh, and suggested that the Crown should defray the costs which the litigants were put to through the indisposition of the R.M. Mr* Wardell admitted that the question was a serious one for the parties concerned, but said he did not see how the costs could be recovered. Mr. Travers suggested that the question of costs should be adjourned in order to obtain the decision of Justice Richmond upon the point, whether mandamus could not be issued to compel the Crown to pay the expenses alluded to. His Worship intimated his readiness to pursue such a course, and it was decided to adjourn the question as to the liabilitys of the Crown. Subsequently Glew was charged with perjury, and was remanded on bail. THE KAIPOA SEAT VACANT. The Speaker in the House of Representatives notifies the receipt of Isaac Wilson’s resignation of his seat for Kaipoa. The scale of Sheriff’s fees is announced by the acting Chief Justice. Walter Kitson was appointed Acting Commissioner of Crown Lands, Canterbury, during the absence, on leave, of Commissioner Baker, and the resignation affecting Inspector Swindly, A. C., as School Commissioner for various Provincial Districts are Gazetted. Dunedin, April 10. At a meeting of the parishioners of St. Matthew’s Church this morning, the vestry reported that they had succeeded in raising the required sum of £1,600, and were now in a position to continue the church as a parish one. THE IMPENDING FAILURES—ANTICIPATED DISCLOSURES. The Herald has the following :—Some unpleasant rumors were afloat yesterday relative to a large business house in this city. It is currently reported that on investigation into the working of the establishment referred to, that it is likely to lead to strange revelations in connection with commercial matters. COPPER COMPANY. Christchurch, April 10. An attempt is to be made to work the deposit of green copper discovered by Ford and Partridge in the Malvern district. Analysis shows there is a sufficient quantity of metal to make it payable, and a company is to be formed under the title of the Malvern and Cornish Mining Co.
