Mail News.—ln another column will be found a continuation of the ’Frisco Mail Summary, a portion of which appeared in our last.

Strychnine. —A suicidal mania for poisoning by strychnine seems to be developing itself. By our telegrams we have accounts of no less than five deaths from this cause.

Departures.—The schooners Orpheus, Columbia and Gisborne left for Auckland this afternoon. The latter will call in at the coastal ports on her way up.

Meetings.—The usual monthly meeting of Hospital and Library committees will be held to-night for the transaction of general business. Tenders.—Mr. Finneran has received seven tenders for the erection of a dwelling house on the Whataupoko, to the order of Mr. C. Ferris, Esq. They average £4OO, but neither tender has, up to the present, been accepted.

Our Drainage.—The heavy shower of rain which set in shortly after two o’clock to-day showed the defective drainage of our main road. From Page’s corner up to the Clothing Factory’s shop, a lake was quickly formed extending over the pathway nearly up to the door-steps, and rendering it necessary to wade through several inches of water in passing along.

Shipping News.—The Southern Cross leaves Auckland to-night for this port, and is expected about Friday morning. The Ringarooma will also arrive on Friday about noon, as she will leave Auckland to-morrow. On Sunday the Waihora may be looked for from Melbourne and Southern Ports. The Mania left this port this afternoon for Napier.

The Proposed Railway.—During the sitting of the Borough Council last night the Board went into Committee on the proposed railway scheme, in order to consider the communication re the question from the County Council, and after a long and animated discussion several resolutions were passed, the whole of which were fatal to steam railways through the town. A report of the proceedings will appear as soon as possible.
