[Per Electric Telegraph—Copyright.] [Reuter’s Telegrams.] DESTRUCTIVE FLOODS AND LOSS OF LIFE. New York, March 26. News has been received here that the Mississippi has overflowed its banks, and that an immense tract of country near New Orleans is submerged. It is feared that many .persons have been drowned. London, March 26. The homeward mails via Suez and Brindisi from Melbourne (Feb. 14) were delivered here yesterday. The s.s. Zealandia, with the homeward mails dated Auckland, Mar. 4, arrived on Sunday at San Francisco. THE SOUDAN. [Reuters Telegrams.] FURTHER ADVANCE — PROSTRATION OF TROOPS. Cairo, March 27. The latest telegrams from Souakim state the British troops commenced to march towards Osman Digna’s camp up to the hill country near Tamaneb. At noon yesterday the column had arrived midway between the latter place and Souakim, when a halt was called, 400 men being prostrated by the intense heat and difficult nature of the road. The advance will not be resumed until daybreak. CAVALRY SKIRMISHES. The cavalry had several skirmishes with the enemy, who were closely watching the movemenls of the British troops, and a number of Arabs have been killed. FURTHER ENGAGEMENTS. — DISPERSAL OF THE REBELS-—TAMANEB BURNED TO THE GROUND. (Received Meh. 27th, 2 20 p m.) Telegrams are to hand from Souakim announcing that General Graham has dispersed the rebels from the neighborhood of Tamaneb. The British troops bivouacked last night at a point midway between Souakim and Tamaneb, resumed their march at daybread, and advanced some distance beyond the latter town, where they came up with the enemy. General Graham at once ordered his troops to open fire upon the rebels. They offered no resistance, but fled hastily to the mountains. No attempt was made to follow them, but Tameneb was burned to the ground by the British troops before they returned to camp. Intelligence has been received from Berber that telegraphic communication with Shingy has been restored, but no news is to hand as to the position of the garrison there.
