(reuter’s telegrams.) THE FRANCO-CHINESE WAR. THE FRENCH PRESS AGITATE FOR FURTHER ADVAN CE. Paris, March 16. Parisian and other French papers continue to urge that the victory at Baccinh should be promptly followed up, and recommend that the French army should forthwith advance upon and occupy Hanghoa and other towns to the westward of Bacninh. INCITING TO ANARCHY. ARREST OF THIRTY-SIX MEN. Vienna, March. 31. The Police at Buda Sisk have effected the arrest of thirty-six men on a charge of plotting to incite anarchy in that city. [Per Press Association.] Christchurch, March 17, For the widow and family of John Campbell, who was killed about live weeks ago by the bursting of a grindstone at Buchanan’s Foundry, £276 has been collected, and it is expected that the sum will reach £3OO.
St. Patrick's Day is celebrated to-night by a dinner at the Catholic Literary Society Rooms, and a concert at the Theatre Royal. • A meeting of the Canterbury Members of Parliament has been called for Friday next to consider the best means of staying the new railway tariff. Two candidates, to pass as solicitors, were examined to-day by Weston and Allan Holmes. Tima.ru, March 17. At the District Court, C. Goddard was indicted for larceny as a bailee of £6, the property of G. Eamsley, of the Shamrock Hotel, on the 23rd ult. He pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to three months’ hard labor. Wellington, March 17. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, have received the following telegram from their London office, dated 15th instant:—“ The wool sales closed at an average decline of £d. to Id. per lb. on last sale prices, the principal decline being in faulty lambs, superior mediums, washed superior combing, washed medium, and inferior and faulty scoured. The sales comprised about 290,000 bales, 30,000 bales being held over for future disposal, and 165,000 bales have been taken for export. POLICE RAID ON THE PUBLIC HOUSES. St. Patrick’s Day was celebrated by the Irishmen by a procession through the town, and a picnic at the Hutt. The police made a raid on public houses yesterday, and it is understood that proceedings are to be taken against four publicans for a breach of the Licensing Act. SUDDEN DEATH. Dunedin, March 17. A man named King, residing at Mornington, died suddenly on Saturday night. He was seated at tea table, when he was seized with a fit of coughing, during which he broke a blood-vessel, and expired almost immediately. At the Police Court to-day, Gerald Eldora, licensee of the Anchor Hotel, was fined 40s. and costs for Sunday trading and had his license endorsed. The Bench said, in reference to the defence that the barman sold contrary to instructions, that in these cases it was no use to bring evidence as to having discharged the barman, for that was merely a farce. The barman in this case was discharged two or three times under similar circumstances, Auckland, March 17. The Henderson Mill races passed off most successfully. There were 1,500 persons present. THE LICENSING ELECTION. The enquiry into the validity of the city licensing election has been adjourned till Tuesday, the 25th, on the ground of objection now narrowed down to ten. Six tenders have been received for the construction of the frozen meat works, but none as yet have been accepted. The three lowest are local men.
