[Per United Press Association.] INCREASE OF CRIMINALS. Auckland, March 11. The criminal statistics of Auckland district show that the total number of offences reported in this district last year was 3,798, in connection with which 3,679 persons were apprehended, and 1,294 proceeded against by summons. This shows an increase of 98 in the cases reported, 152 in the persons apprehended, and 193 in the number summoned. MRS. LANGTRY—PROBABLE VISIT TO NEW ZEALAND. Morris Greenwall, who is a passenger by the mail steamer, has engaged Mrs. Langtry for a colonial tour. She comes out by °the July steamer, and in the meantime Green wall will make arrangements for her appearance in Australia.. She brings a small company with her, and will appear in “As You Like it,” “ She Stoops to Conquer,” “ An Unequal Match,” and other pieces. Mrs. Langtry and her company will also, in all probability, play in New Zealand. March 12 Morris Greenwall reports having arranged with Dion Boucicault for an early tour in Australia, and New Zealand. Dunedin, March 11. Dodson, a publican at Port Chalmers, has called a meeting of his creditors. The liabilities are stated at £16,000. The New Zealand Drug Company’s net profits for the year (with the previous balance) are £16,474. After paying 10 per cent, dividend, £8,246 is carried forward. March 12. A Freethought Conference is being held here, delegates being present from various parts of the Colony. Mr. Stout has been elected President, Mr. Ballance (of Wanganui) Vice-President, and Mr. Farnie Secretary. IMPORTANT DECISION. At the Waste Land Board to-day an opinion was received from the Crown Solicitor to the effect, that the second highest bidder for a section cannot be declared the purchaser’ when the license issued to the highest bidder has been forfeited. The Board decided to forward the opinion to the Minister for Lands.
