News is to hand from Pekin that Tsotsungtang, Viceroy at Nankin, has been superseded by Tsengkwotchuan, the Governor-General of Canton. Cairo, Feb. 17. Gordon Pasha arrived yesterday at Khartoum, and was well received by the populace. He has issued a proclamation, and caused it to be publicly posted throughout the district. The document recognises El Mahdi as Sultan of Kordofan, and announces the remission of half the taxes now levied, and that free traffic in slaves (sic) will be permitted. The British expedition to Souakim will be confined to the relief of Tokar, and will not operate further against the rebels. Spies have arrived at Souakim, stating the Arabs are mustering in force near Tokar. The roads are carefully watched by them, and the spies themselves were hotly persued. London, Feb. 18. A wedding-party, consisting of thirty persons, have been drowned on the river Theiss, in Hungary. The Earl of Morley has baen offered the Governorship of Victoria, but has refused. The French Government loan of £14,000,000, which was announced on the Ist February, has been covered fourfold. Dr. Wm. Stubbs, Canon of London, has been appointed Bishop of Chester, in place of the Right Rev. Wm. Jacobcen, who resigned. Dr. Bidding has been appointed Bisaop of Southwell. Consols remain at 101. New Zealand securities are quoted to-day as follows: Five per cent. 10-40 loan remains at 105 , 5 per cent. 1889 loan, 103 J; 4| per cent. 18791904 loan, 100 ex div.; 4 per cent, inscribed stock has advanced to par. Ihe wheat and tallow markets are unchanged. At the wool.auction to-day, 10,800 bale s were o ff e r ed. The tone of the ’sale wa s quiet.
