CRICKET-MATCH AT ORMOND.
A very enjoyable afternoon was spent at Ormond on Saturday, when sides chosen from the married and single men of the district tried conclusions with the willow. During the match some capital cricket was exhibited by several of the players. As the result of the preliminaries, the choice fell to the captain of the married team, who elected to send the bachelors into the field. The eleven succeeded in putting together fiftyeight in their first innings, but they were all disposed of for twenty-seven in the second. The single men scored fifty-five in their first innings, and twenty-eight in the second for the loss of three wickets. Under the impression that the game had been won by the “ boys,” the stumps were drawn ; but, as will be seen from the scores, the benedicts had two runs to the good, while their opponents had seven wickets to fall. Messrs. Stevens and Conway acted as umpires, and Mr. Higgins as scorer. Mr. Wallace made some excellent catches, for which he received the plaudits of a large assemblage of the youth and beauty of Ormond who were on the ground. Mr. Wyatt proved himself the right man in the right place behind the wicket, while Messrs. Currie, Boland, King, Gibbs, Ashley, and several others showed they had considerable knowledge of the game. It was stated on the ground that a Gisborne team intended to challenge the Ormonites to a friendly encounter. If the rumor is correct the local cricketers may make sure of a good outing and a hearty welcome at Ormond. At the conclusion of the match the usual compliments were paid, and it was resolved to form a club, for which purpose a meeting will be held next Saturday evening. We believe a measure of credit is due to Mr. W. E. Cross for getting up the match and bringing it to a successful issue. Appended are the scores :— Married.—First innings: Harris, stumped, 3 ; Ashley, b Currie, 15 ; Cross, b Currie, 0 ; Wallace, c Higgins, b Currie, 0 ; Skillicorn, hit wicket, b Malone, 0; Burke, b Perry, 0 ; Dwyer, b Perry, 1 ; Paviour, b Gibbs, 0; W. The single men had all the advantage of the bowling on their side, but the married were much smarter in the field. With one or two players who were not present a very good eleven can be got in and around Ormond.
