LAST NIGHT'S WIRES.

[Per United Press Association.] Dunedin, Feb. 16. The pedestrian-match to-day between C. Hulston, of Christchurch, and F. Woods, of Dunedin, for £lOO a-side and the Championship of New Zealand, resulted in an easy victory for Woods. The match was to be run in five distances of 100, 200, 300, 350, and 400 yards respectively. Woods was the favorite at 6 to 3, but Hulston was fancied for short distances. The first distance taken was the 100 yards, which Hulston won by fully a yard, having had the best of the start. The next was the 300 yaids. Woods led the first 80 yards, and being a dozen yards ahead, a little way from home Hulston stopped. The 200 yards’ distance was won by Woods by half a dozen yards; after which, of course, the result was looked upon ns a certainty for him foi* the 350 yards. The betting was 10 to lon Woods. Hulston got away first, rind, after going 20 yards, deliberately ran in front of Woods, who, with the impetus he had, knocked Hulston over, and won as he liked. The Christchurch man’s supporters raised some hubbub over this, but met with no sympathy, as it was considered Holston’s dodge was too palpable. The 400 yards did not require to be run.
