[Per Electric Telegraph—Copyrioht,] [Reuter’s Telegrams,] London, Feb. 2, The French authorities have promised to give full warning to natives of neutral nations resident in China before making any attack on Chinese territory. The Melbourne portion (2000 carcases) of the cargo of frozen meat by the s.s. Cuzoo has been found to be in good condition. The first portion placed on the market has realised s£d to fid per pound. The mail, via Sues and Brindisi, from Melbourne (December 20) were delivered here to-day. It has transpired that Thomas and Sons, stock-brokers, who became defaulters to the amount of £BOO,OOO, have defrauded the London Chartered Bank of Australia to the extent of £120,000 by the wholesale appropriation of securities belonging to the Bank’s customers. Young and Larks, Australian merchants, have sequestrated their estates with liabilities to the amount of £280,000, but it is reported that the assets in the colonies represent 30s. in the pound. Lattbr.—lt is hoped that the suspension of Messrs. Young and Juarks, 5 Oopthad Buildings, E.C., soft goods warehousemen, of Sydney, will be only of a temporary character, It is probable that the creditors will grant the firm time to meet their liabilities, as then their colonial assets are expected to cover their debts. The market for Colonial breadstuffs remains quiet but steady, at the following prices :—Adelaide wheat, ex store, 445.; Adelaide flour, ex store, Bls.; New Zealand wheat, ex store, 365. to 40s. The total amount of wheat afloat for the United Kingdom to-day is returned at 1,810,000 quarters, an increase of 10,000 during the week.
Australian tallow continues dull, and prices have suffered a fall of 6d. per cwt. Beef, fair average quality, is quoted at 395.; and mutton, do., 425. The stock of tallow in London to-day is 7,400 casks, an increase of 400 casks during the past month. The wool market is steadier. Arrivals to date for the next auction amount to 200,000 bales. Cairo, Feb. 2. News has been received here that Baker Pasha, after landing at Trinkitat, made a reconnaissance in force and had a skirmish with the enemy. The latter fled southwards. Baker’s cavalry pursued the rebels for several miles, and killed hundreds of them. Baker Pasha has been carrying on negotiations with a number of Arab Sheiks who have shown themselves favorable to the pretensions of El Mahdi. The result of his efforts have been so far successful that several of them are giving in their submission to the Egyptian authority. Colonel Gordon, recently appointed Governor of the Soudan, passed through Korosko yesterday, and entered the desert en route to Khartoum.
