[Per United Press Association.] Christchurch, Fab. 3. Thomas Ballantyne, a farmer, was thrown from a wagonette when returning home through his horse bolting. His neck was broken, and death was instantaneous. The Exhibition was closed on Saturday night. A bowling-match between the Christchurch Club and Victorians was played this afternoon, and resulted in a victory for the Victorians, who scored 99, the Christchurch club getting 01. Auckland, Feb. 8.
A champion billiard-match has been played in the Lome Street Hall between Weiss and Lyons, the former giving 400 points. Weiss went out when Lyons had only reached 701. The best break was 101.
The lad Masou (aged 11) who was drowned at Shelly Beach had gone into the water twice to rescue a comrade’s hat. On returning the first time the boys jeered him, and he made a second attempt, with the fatal result. A man named Henry Woods has been arrested on a charge of arson for setting fire to an empty house (in which he slept), which led to the destruction of five houses in View Road, Kyber Pass, a few days ago. The Auckland Gas Company has declared Bs. fid. per share for the half-year, The annual meeting of the N. Z. Timber Co. has been held, at which a dividend at the rate of 10 per cent, per annum was authorised, The net profits for the year are £12,268.
Te Kootl, with a large number of followers, passed through Cambridge this morning en route for the King Country. He did not make a halt at Cambridge. The body of a man was found hanging to a Karaka tree, near Whau Blockhouse, and must have been there for months, as the scalp and a portion of the flesh had disappeared. Wellington; Feb. 8.
A boy nine years of age, named Thomas Benge, of Mangai’Oa, has been drowned in the Hutt River, He was crossing a ford to fetch cattle, when the current swept him away.
A number of visiting sportsmen yesterday had a trip to the new course now being con. struoted for the Wellington Jockey Club. The general opinion was that the course when finished would compare favorably with other courses in New Zealand.

Singie men—English, 10 ; Irish, 82; Scotch, 6; foreign 4. The remainder are families. The inquiry into the stranding of the barque Fusilier will be held on Wednesday. The barque is not injured, but doubt is felt as to whether it would pay to get her off. Thames, Jan. 4. At a meeting of the Board of Governors of the High School, held to-day, Miss McKenzie, daughter of Kenneth McKenzie, was appointed Lady Assistant Teacher, at a salary of £2OO per year. Barr’s Minstrels opened here on Saturday night to a crowded house. Dunedin, Feb. 4. The following are the scores in the cricket match Tasmania v. The cricket match Tasmania v. Otago was concluded to-day. The Tasmanians in their second innings made 47, leaving Otago only 28 to get to win, which they did with the loss of two wickets,
A deputation of the Trades and Labor Council waited on Mr, Stout on Saturday night, and he agreed to draft a Bill for the next session to enable seamen to obtain the franchise by holding electoral rights, similar to miners’ rights. He also Agreed to draft a petition to have Dunedin reformed into one electoral district t The pockets of the clothes of the Tasmanian cricketers were rifled in the pavilion on Saturday, and about £5O stolen, The police to-day arrested a young man named Marr Ort suspicion, union Bank £1 notes altered into £3 have been discovered in circulation. At a meeting of the High School Board of Governors to-day, letters were read from Mr. Stout and Miss Dalrymple, suggesting the advisability of instituting classes for the teaching of cookery at the Girls’ High School, Its consideration was postponed.
