[Per United Press Association.] Wellington, Feb. 3. The second day there was fine weather, but the attendance was not so numerous as on the first day. The following are the results: — Railway Stakes—Mischief, 1; Administrator, 2; Wihora, 3. Minerva also ran. Mischief won, hard held, in Imin. 21secs. Dividend, inside, £1 12s. ; outside, £1 16s.—Hutt Park Stakes—Salvage, 1; Consul, 2; Minerva, 3s. Sir George also started. Mischief and Wihora were scratched. Won easily. Time, 2mins. 20secs. 1,800 sheep were brought into town yesterday from Wairarapa by rail and 2,000 more to-day. At a School Committee meeting Mr, M. W. Green, M.H.8., gave notice to move that a committee be appointed to confer with the teachers with the object of opening classes for Bible-reading and repeating the Lord's prayer, prior to the ordinary time of opening the schools, and also to prepare a syllabus of Bible-reading lessons for use in the schools. Auckland, Feb. 3.

At the regular quarterly communication of the Provincial Grand Lodge, S.C., over which the Hon. Sir W. F. Whitaker presided, in his capacity of Provincial Grand Master, the occasion was taken advantage of to congratulate the R.W.P.G.M. on the honor of Knighthood just conferred on him by Her Majesty, and of which intimation had just been received. The trades’ organ, entitled La&or, has appeared as a weekly at twopence. At a meeting of the Cricket Association, it was stated that there was a debit balance of £5l in connection with the visit of the Canterbury team. A statement was made to the effect that the financial position of the Association would not permit of any offer being made to the Tasmanian cricketers; but it was understood that an unofficial communication should be sent to that team. A general meeting of the New Zealand Tobacco Growing and Manufacturing Co. was held, at which it was reported that about one-half of the total shares of the Company had been applied for and allotted. It was resolved to start manufacturing operations at once. Mr. Vollbracht, working manager, was instructed to get his cigar-makers here, and commence manufacturing upon the few tons of leaf left over from last year’s growth, The reports received from the farmers now engaged in growing the leaf are most favorable! At the annual meeting of the Working Men’s Club, the report shows a balance of £2OB. The decrease in the takings at the bar was through the strides of the temperance movement. The City Council strongly condemn the Insurance Companies for not contributing to the support of the Fire Brigade.
