The Governor visited the Blueskin Show and the Hon. G. McLean yesterday. To-day he and Major Cantley have inspected the harbor with a view to defences. Christchurch, Jan. 11. The Criminal Sittings ended last night. Joseph Wheeler (sheep-stealing) got two years,’ and Joseph Pritchard (indecent assault) four years,’ both with hard labor. Auckland, Jan. 13. The Australia arrived at 6.30 this morning. She left San Francisco on the 23rd December. Passengers for Auckland —Captain and Mrs. R. Hill, Rev. Father Stack, Mr. and Mrs. Dean, child, and servant, Mr, and Mrs. W. D. Stewart, Mr. and Mrs. H. Brown, Miss Hili, Mrs. A. Campbell, Messrs. D. Hill, F. G. Gordon, Gifford, Marshall, Sobersky, Wesley, Fletcher, Denham, Mennain, Knight, Isaokson, Cure, Mac George, Colley, Peake, and five steerage; for Sydney —29 saloon and 39 steerage. Among the passengers for Australia is H. M. Mackay, agent for the Great Overland Route through America, now on a business tour through the Colonies. The steamer leaves at four o’clock this afternoon for Sydney. At the inquest on David Tusee, gumdigger, supposed to have been accidentally poisoned, a verdict of “ Death from natural causes ” was returned. The deceased had been drinking heavily. A special meeting of the Harbor Board is called for Tuesday, to consider the question of the Engineer’s report on the Calliope graving dock, and dispose of the tenders received for its construction. From the rumors current in town, the Committee’s recommendation will be that the Board should appoint another Engineer to draw up plans and specifitions prior to calling for fresh tenders.

Edwards and Remington (rule nisi.) , Jan. 12, Information lias been received of a fire having occurred on Messrs Biddiford and Sons’ station, on the East Coast, resulting in the total destruction of a shearing-shed, stables, cow-house, and yard, and fourteen bales of wool. The fire occurred about two o’clock on Thursday morning. The building was insured for £l5O. , The following are the insurances bn Riddiford’s stationlmperial, £lOOO on building; the New Zealand Co. will lose about £2OO on the fifteen bales of wool burned.
