Baron Maolay, the New Guinea explorer, has addressed a letter to Lord Derby, Secretary of State for the Colonies, urging the British Government, if it should decide to annex New Guinea, to respect the rights of the natives, and expressing fears that at* tempta will be made to kidnap them for the labor trade.
The homeward Australian mails via Sues and Brindisi, which left Melbourne on Nov. 22, were delivered yesterday. Consols are at New Zealand securities : 5 per cent. 10'40 loan, 104|; 5 per cent. 1889 loan, 103|; 4| per cent. 1879-1904 loan, 1011; 4 per cent, inscribed stock, 100. The market rate of discount is now 2} per cent., J below the bank rate. Colonial Breadstuffs—Adelaide wheat, ex store, 4C'S.; New Zealand do., 88s. 6d. to 48s. 6d.; Adelaide flour, ex store, 82s. Australian Tallow—Best beef, 895.; best mutton* 445. The stock in London amounts to 7,000 casks.
Calcutta, Jan. 2. Up to the present time the International Exhibition has been visited by 238,500 persons. The juries commence the allocation of awards on Jan. 15. Ottawa, Jan. 2. A serious disaster has occurree on the railway near Toronto. A workmen’s train collided shortly after leaving the city with a goods train, and twenty passengers were killed* thirty others being seriously injured.
