The leading solicitors of Gisborne notify that their offices will be closed from Christmas Eve to the 2nd of January, inclusive. We call attention to the programme in another colum of the concert to be given on Monday evening next, for the benefit of Madame Stewart. The nominations for the Hurdle Race and Uawa Stakes at the Tologa Bay race-meeting will be received at the Masonic Hotel, Gisborne, up to noon to-day. During the thunder-storm on Thursday at 10 a.m., lightning struck a matai tree about 60 yards from Mr Bond’s house, Matawhero, breaking it into pieces. The concussion was felt severely in the house. In the Supremo Court, yesterday, the case of W. L. Rees v. Johnson was adjourned until 11 o'clock to-day. J udgment will also be given iu the case of Ponsford v. Bishop, and Te Huke and others v. the N.Z.N. Land Company, to-day. The school children's sports were held in Captain Tucker’s paddock yesterday afternoon. The weather was all that could be desired, and the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Mr Evans acted as judge, Mr Dufaur as starter, Mr Morgau as handicapper, aud Messrs Hall, Hepburn, and Henderson assisted as a committee in carrying out the proceedings. His Honor Judge Brookfield will be a passenger for the North by the steamer tomorrow. The district may well congratulate itself upon the successful manner in which Judge Brookfield has administered the Division Act of last year. His Honor, will, it is expected, not return before the February Court at Tologa Bay. An instance of precocity occurred the other day, which might have proved serious. Two youngsters being at play together and some juvenile dispute having arisen one made an attempt to stab the other with a pen knife. Fortunately the blade encountered the spade bone (scapula) aud no harm was done. Had it been above or below, or on either side this would probably have been a serious case. As the juvenile delinquent has experienced a severe castigation at the bauds of his parents, it is not worth while mentioning names.

On Monday next, a special meeting of the Cook County Council will be held, when the following business is to be transacted :— To receive tenders for Kaiteratahi river works and supply of gravel for main road ; to fix salaries of officers for 1884 ; to decide upon the quality of furniture to be supplied ; and any ordinary business requiring early attention.

There are in training, at present, at Wae-renga-a-hika, no less than nine horses for the forthcoming Boxing Day events, viz At Mr. Francis’ commodious and well-venti-lated, newly-uonstructed loose-boxes. Mr Carroll's Eriothonious and Dhudeen ; Mr. Ruru’s Orphan. At Mr Cooper’s : Thorpe’s Cat, Cooper’s Lenette, Bond’s Songster Filly, and Jenny Lind. At Mr McDonald’s : Star and Imposter, These horses mostly take their exercise every morning together on the course, aud some good galloping is done occasionally. In fact, there is no doubt that the coming competition will be keen indeed. Messrs. Thorpe, Dustan, and others of the cognoscenti, are evidently on their metal, and some unexpected results may be anticipated.

At the termination of the case Wi Te Ruke and others v. N. Z. N. L. S. Company, Mr McLean aaVod that the jury might be permitted to accept more than the 10s. per day. He asked this as a losing party. The jury had been greatly taxed, and he had to thank both them and his Honor for the great forbearance and patience which had been shown. Mr Edwards objected on the grounds of its being a bad precedent and illegal. Mr Rees wished to know if it would not all come out of the Maori’s rent. Mr McLean said it would come out of his own fees. His remuneration in the case would be lessened by that amount. In refusing the application his Honor said there was too much payment for public duties already. The children of the Gisborne District School gave their annual concert—which proved a marked success—in Parnell and Boylan’s Hall, on Thursday evening last, A great deal of care had evidently been taken by their instructor, Mr Bull, the second master of the school, to induce the children to keep correct time, and it was pleasing to note the orderly behaviour of the litte ones. The part singing was very creditable for children, and the solos were much appreciated by the audience. Among those who afforded proof of possessing some musical ability we may mention Misses Annie Parnell, Good, and Gertrude Schultz, and Masters Langford, Teat, and H. de Costa. Mrs Bach aud Miss de Costa played the pianoforte accompaniments, aud W. D, Johnson, Chairman of the School Committee, presided, We understood that Mr D. Page made a present of four dozen bottles of lemonade to the children, and that the use of the piano was given gratis by Messrs Large and Townley.
