GOLD MARKING.
Ta E annual report of the Deputy M aster of the Mint contains a le'ter .bv Prof. W. Chandler Roberts, bearilit ; on the question of the abolition of the • *' carat ” system. Gold in the fori n of coins, or bars for coinage, is now - assayed on the decimal system — j.e. fine "gold is taken as unity or 1001), and’ the standard as 916 6. The carat syste rn consists in recording the alloy as being so much better or worse than standi rd, and is founded on an ideal unit Lhe “ carat pound.” The latter system '» convenient to those accuslomed to commercial transactions in the preei ous metal based on the alloy known as' standard gold, but it is unintelligible t° those who employ the decimal sy> tern, and refers to pure <rold as 1006'- The modern system is the simplest and best for many reasons as everyone can understand what 250, 500, or 900 means, as compared with 1000.
