The proposed race to Australia between the Vestal and the ship Northern Monarch will therefore not take place. In view of the possible outbreak of war between France and China, orders have been issued for a prompt re-inforcement of the China Squadron. Parleying has commenced between the British and French Governments with a view of arranging a settlement of the Tonquin difficulty, by friendly mediation, between France and China. LONDON COMMERCIAL. Consols remain at 101 A. New Zealand securities are now quoted as follows : —5 per cent. 10-40 loan, 105 ; 5 per cent. 1889 loan, 103 ; per cent. 1879-1904 loan, 101 ; 4 per cent, inscribed stock, 1004. Breadstuff’s. —The market is unchanged. Adelaide wheat, ex store, 46s 6d ; New Zealand ditto, 38s to 44s 6d. Adelaide flour, ex store, 325. Australian tallow.—Best boef, 38s 6d ; best mutton, 39s 6d. The catalogue at to-day’s wool sale comprised 10,800 bales. A firm and active demand was experienced. Cairo, Nov. 26. Intelligence is to hand from Chartouiny, a large town in upper Nubia. That El Madhi, with a great following, is now in close proximity of the place, and have have stoppt d all supplies from entering. It is feared that the rebels are about to attack the town, and the population, numbering nearly 50,000. are panic-stricken.
