SPORTING.

Great excitement prevailed amongst the sporting community in the town on Tuesday morning as to the result of the Victorian Racing Club’s Spring meeting. Numerous were the inquiries at the telegraph office as to whether the wires were in working order, but it was not until near 12 o'clock that the tantalising uncertainty was dispelled. The first to receive the news was Mr E. Beresford, of the Settlers Hotel, who had made special arrangements for receiving the earliest information, great satisfaction was expressed when it was known that Martini-Henri, a New Zealand horse bred by the Auckland Stud Company, was the winner of the Derby. The time is extraordinary, as being the very fasteet on record—2jseos. less than Darebin’s in 1881, who took 2min*. 41Jsecs. to run it. MartiniHenri is a three-year old oolt by Musket— Sylvia, and was bought by the Hon. J. White, when seven months old, for £1,230.
