At the Canterbury Jockey Club Spring Meeting to-day, nearly 600# persone were present, ths weather was beautiful, but there was a cold wind blowing. There was considerable excitement over this race on account of the Hon. W, Robinson having declared to win with Nonsense, which it was known he had backed freely at 100 to 35 and 100 to 30 for large amounts. At the start considerable delay was caused by the unsteadiness of some of the horses, particularly Nonsense. After a deal of trouble a fair start was effected, Nonsense and Tasman at once shot to the front, while Tim Whiffler had the worst of it. Tasman took the lead round the bend, with the Poet and Nonsense on his quarters, Envious and Hippodamia close up. When nearing the Stand the last named took the lead, Tasman second, and the Poet third, the rest were in a cluster, except Lady Emma, who was last rounding the bend. Nonsense still led, Chevoit overhauled Tasman, and Hippodamia took fourth place, they passed Coutt’s in this order. At the back of the course Nonsense had a lead of about a length, while Hippodamia wu gaining on Tasman and Cheviot, the last named falling back into the ruck. At Ford's Tasman again went into second place, and Cheviot fell still further to the rear. Turning into the straight Nonsense led, Tasman fast closing up and and Hippodamia lying third, the whip was now put to Adamant and Tasman, while Tim Whiffler took third position. As they neared the stand Tasman gained still more on Nonsense, and a tremendous race ensued for first honors, terminating in favor of Mr C’Brien's horse by a neck, Tim Whiffler a good third, Hippodamia fourth Turquoise fifth, Lady Emma sixth, and others tailing off. A close finish caused intense excitement, the

The papers to-day condemn the decision of the stewards relative to the running of Archie for the Derby. The second day’s racing of the Victoria Racing Club’s Spring Meeting took place to-day in the presence of what is believed to be the largest assemblage of visitors ever recorded. Twenty-eight others started. Sir Modred was scratched. A good start was effected, Claptrap, Dirk, Hatteraick, and Le Grand, being first to get sway. Crossing the tan Dirk and Katteraiok, was in front MartiniHenri, Archie, and Claptrap following, and Despot, Cunnamulla, First Demon, Commotion. Dukedom, and Aide de Camp, holding central position. Passing the Grand Stand, Claptrap again took the lead, with Archie and Martini-Henri close behind, Lesbia, Stockwell, Despot, Aide de Camp, and Nicholas following, and Dirk and Hatteraick last. Rounding the turn Claptrap was still in front, and Arcnie next, Linda then shot to the front and led along the river side, then came Archie, Claptrap, Martini-Henri, with Aide de Camp, Lesbia, and Dukedom, well up. Dirk end Hatteraick were still last. At the bridge Archie and Claptrap again went forward, closely followed by Luba, Martini-Henri, Despot, and Dukedom, with Santa Claus and Stockwell in the centre of the field. At the back of the course Archie aad Santa Claus who had taken second place were leading, with Dukedom third, and Aide-de-camp and Kuhinoor last. Entering the straight Martini-Henri took the load, Claptrap followed next, the rest of the field being in straggling order. First Water coming through them with a rush taking an improved position. Martini-Henri going well, drew away from the rest, and increasing his lead, romped home an easy winner. First Water was coming up fast at the finish and landed two lengths away, followed in order by Commotion, Sardius, Magnet, First Demon, Aide-de-camp, Recovery, Archie, and Nicholes; Kohinoor, Bisbis, and Kingsdale bringing up the rear. Time, Smins 30j secs.

Martini-Henri was ridden by Williamson, and was never whipped from start to finish. The attendance on the Flemington race course is estimated at 123,000 people.
