CORRESPONDENCE.

W® do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions expressed by our correspondents]. :o; DOWN WITH THE DUST. TO THE EDITOR, Sir, —Now that the dry weather seems fairly set in, and Gladstone Road having already given us one or two samples of wha can be done in the way of “ raising the dust,” and knowing the impecunious state of the Borough exchequer, I w..s puzzling my brains as to the beit and cheapest means that, could be devised to meet the coming evil, when chance, or good fortune, led me past the New Fire Engine shed when the Fire Brigade was having what they called a “ wet practice.” The brilliant idea (or uh it I consider such) struck me all of a heap — Here was the very meaus already at hand to efficiently cope with the approaching enemy, A splendid engine standing over a well with au unlimited supply of water available at all times, any amount of force, thousands of feet of first-class hose ready to l»e run out at any moment, and all other apliances for wa-ering our streets and fo »t--par.hs ; here, thought I, is a solution of the difficulty. But another obstacle immediately stared me in the face—-what aoout a •orps to work it, as it could be hardly expected that the fire brigade, being mostly composed of working men, could fford say two hours in the morning to undertake the duties free of charge. This was anothei poser—but happening to cast my eyes upon the members practising, I discovered one eminent councillor, and one well-known Borough official amongst the crowd, and another brilliant idea struck me—why not form what might be called “The Dusi Corps,” from amongst the councillors ami Borough officials—happy thought 1 I immediately made enquiries, and to my delight found what I consider the nucleus of a very efficient brigade, principally composed of the above officials—as thus :—Deputy Superintendent Townley, the Town Clerk, the Borough Engineer, the Clerk of the Works the Road Overseer, the Inspector of Nuisances, the Town Solicitor, the Wharfinger, and as a stand-by perhaps, the night-soil man. Now, I thought that nearly all of the above gentlemen being in the pay of the borough, would no. refuse, but on the con trary be only too happy to have the chance of devoting, say an hour every morning—or just as the weather suited—confering such an inestimable boon on the inhabitants, as watering the streets and footpaths free of charge It would be a fine healthy exercise for themselves, and instead of having their usual dip in the sea or river, might get it applied through the aid of a nuzzle, ur if preferred could take a dip iu the well. I also learned that the fire brigade is to be furnished with some sort of uniform. I would also suggest one for the “ Dusty’s,” in the shape of oil-skin overalls and a souwester. Let me know what your readers think of my plan, and oblige.—l am, &., Non-so Dusty,
