NEW ZEALAND MINERAL OIL.
At Mr Crompton’s foundry there was an exhibition of the products of the Southern Cross Petroleum Company. Samples were shown of the crude oil, which was a greenish fluid resembling thin syrup; the same washed, much improved in color; distilled oil, and the same washed. This last is a nearly colorless liquid, which burned well in a lamp. It was shown by experiment that the specific gravity of the marketable article was 800, water being 1000. The flashing point was stated to be 130 deg. Fahr., but the specimen operated on did not fire until heated to 145 deg. The process of distillation was gone through, and the manipulation of the oil iu its various stages was fully explained. A dense residum left by distillation was stated fco be valuable as a lubricator, but its percentage to the rectified oil was not ascertained. All seemed to be satisfied and pleased with the experiments.— Christchurch “Press.”
