A NOBLE CHALLENGE.

A MUNIFICENT DONATION. Is response to the challenge given by Mr P. Barker, Mr A. Accordingly early yesterday morning Mr H. M'Kay wgS seen riding off in the direction of Mr Barket'B station. On informing Mr Bark tri of the state of affairs, ho with dr. iraotoristlc promptitude Immediately rode into’town anil going to the Bank drew L2OO in notes ana proceeding to the holder of the cheque informed him that he was ready to cover the LlOO with hi, L2OO as aoon a, the cash or bank notes were produced. Mr W. Adair then offered to find the cash for the cheque; which he shortly did, and the LlOO together with Mr P. Barker's L2OO was placed in the hands of Mr McKay. This was supplemented by LI from Mr E. Murphy, being the amount of a bet between Mr M'Donald who had laid thia wager agninst Mr Barker’, covering the £lOO. Mr Barker has not alone done this but ha, authorised us to state that ho again challenge, Mr MoDonaid to put down another £lOO and he will again cover it, with £2OO, and if ho (Mr McDonald) puts down £lOOO he will cover it with £2,000.

The donation baa been given on the condition that it form the basia of a permanent endowment fund.
