DONATIONS TO HOSPITAL.

A Noble Challenge. The Hon. Secretary to the Hospital, Mr H. McKay, had occasion, during the prosecution of his canvassing on behalf of the above irstitution, to ask MrP. Barker for a donation to the Hospital, which that gentleman Evas not slow to promise. During the course ■of conversation which ensued, Mr Allan ■McDonald was seen to pass up the road, ■ theieupon Mr Barker remarked, “why ’ don’t you ask the working man’s friend for a feubscription ?” Mr McKay said that he ■certainly would do so. “Well then,” said lMr Barker, whatever sum Mac gives I will I double to any amount. On leaving Mr Barker, Mr McKay speedily made his way -to Mr McDonald, and informed him of the fact that an offer had been made by a certain individual to give double any amount he would present to the Hospital. Mr McDonald asked his informant who the individual was, but Mr McKay said he could not disclose the name. At this Mr McDonald became somewhat irate, and declared his intention of publishing this attempted imposition, with a view of suppressing this sort of tiling. He walked away and entered the post office. Upon second thoughts Mr McKay resolved to disclose Mr Barker’s name, and on Mr McDonald emerging from the P.O. he gave him the information, whereupon Mr McDonald at once stated that he would give Mr Barker a run for his money, and would make a donation of £lOO to the Hospital. Lal erm the day Mr Barker called at the store of Mr McKay, and asked whether Mr McDonald had given anything, as he had been informed that, he had promised £lOO, and said he would immediately cover the £lOO with £2OO, or any other amount in like proportion, providing the cash was put down, and expressed himself as thoroughly earnest in the matter. I We await the result of this challenge with | seme amount of interest.
