J BATTERY.
At the Volunteer Drill Shed on Thursday evening, Lieutenant Boylan was finally examined by Captains Porter and G. J. Winter, (who have been approved of by His Excellency the Governor, as a Board of to his qualifications and proficiency, with a view of promotion. He was first examined in the duties of commander of guard, mode of marching, reliefs and posting sentries, field exercise, general knowledge of ammunition, stores and carriages for 61b Armstrong, time fuse and tangent scale, and afterwards in sword exercise in all its branches. At the completion of the examination, Captain Porter, in a few well chosen words, highly complimented Lieutenant Boylan upon the manner in which he had passed through his examination, and statsa that he did not wish to pass any empty compliments, but he must acknowledge that both himself and Captain Winter were most highly gratified at the state of efficiency shown by Lieutenant Boylan, and he would have very great pleasure in recommending him for promotion. At the termination Lieutenant Boylan was loudly applauded.
