ORMOND LETTER.

(From our own Correspondent.) September 27th, 1883. Mr D. Malone, the succeesful contractor for forming and gravelling the road to Kaiteratahi, started work last week, and, being aided by the fine weather, is rapidly proceeding with his work. The effects of Mr D. McLeod’s labour in en eavouring to protect the river banks in this township, are now plainly seen, as tl e river is rapidly wearing another chanml for itself through the sandbank on the other side. I think that Mr McLeod is deserving of great credit for the way in which he carried out his plans I was very pleased to see that he has obtained two more contracts—one up the Coast, and the contract for the bridge at the Karawa. I am sure he will carry them out to the satisfaction of all. Ormond is looking up now, having three coaches running to Gisborne daily. The farmers and settlers here and further up the country arc now rapidly sowing their crops of potatoes, oats, &c , for the coming season. A new baker’s shop, to the order of Mr Haydon, of Waerenga-a-hika, is being erected by Mr J. Cooper, on the opposite side of the road to the store. Mr Haydon intends going into the confectionery business here as well as the baking, and I have no doubt he will drive a good trade in that line. The members of the Ormond Band are rapidly progressing and in a very short while they will parade the street and discourse sweet music. This will be a treat for Ormond.
