CORRESPONDENCE

We do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions expressed by our correspondents]. TO THE EDITOR. Nir. —The other day I ha I been at, Mr E K Brown’s shop, transac ing a little business, ami by permission I let’’, my “swag” of bUnkeis. &e., there for a short time. On calling for lhe sw»g in the evening, whilst in the act of swinging it. on my shoulder, 1 unfortunately knocked over a s nail bronze <-age or box for hoIdL g twine, which fell ainongM a lot of iron pots and saucepans. Mr Brow irnmedi itely rushed at me, seized and forrib y t ook away my swag, saying “ You have done a lot of damage ; 1. wi I keep this until you pay me; you are drunk, and I have a good mind to give you in charge.” The latter good intention he kept repeating over and over again as if he was on the bench. I spoke quietly to him, and said “ If you wilt let me see what I have broken I will pay the damage.” Mr Brown’s reply was that unless I left the shop he would give me in charge. I quietly' went away. In the morning I went with a friend ami got my sw tg, but not before the sum <>f nine shi - lings h id been extorted from me for damage done to glassware, i caii s.ty with cert Univ that no glass articles or utensils of any kimi were broken by ne. Is it likely a nmn of Mr Brown’s habits would have gl iS' dish- s packed or exhibited on top of iron pots ?•— I am, &c:, Charles Thorpe,
