We understand that the applications for enrolment in the Volunteer h ire Brigade are not iu that proportion winch the enthusiasm shown by many at the lute tires would have led us to expect. Now that all eit>e has been arranged and everything gid into elticieuL and thorough Working order, we hope that Lhe lorinaiioii of lhe corps will iioL be deiaytd through the backwui dueus or lukewarmness ot those who have hitherto been always ready and willing to enlist in any matters likely to prove of public utiity. Lhe uniiorm though inexpensive, will be most becoming, ana will have the merit oi being easily donned or discalded. lhe necessity oi erecting another tire bell ioi the upper end oi the town was strongly urged by Councillor Hepburn at the last meeting ot the Borough Council, and we must say with all 'lue respect Lo lhe reverse opinion expiessed by several Councillors, that it would have been far more Lo the purpose It, instead of increasing the size ot me present one, they had erected another bell further up the road. Though Lhe new bell will be much butter toned ami doubly sonorous in comparison to the pieseutoue, yet it will utterly fait to reach lhe slumbering ears of the denizens of the upper portion oi our town.
