AUCKLAND. A little girl named Katie Fernandez, daughter of the proprietor of the Britemarte Hotel, was accidentally killed last evening. She went up a ladder to the upper storey on to the roof, and whilst feeding the pigeons fell through the skylight head first down to the open court thirty feet below, expiring immediately. WESTPORT. While the steamer Grafton from Nelson was coming up the harbor last night she touched the bank in the north channel, and stuck on the flat. No damage to the hull has been sustained, and she will most likely be got off to-day. CHRISTCHURCH. James Walls, an old colonist, well-known as a breeder of Clydesdales, died on Wed* nesday from an attack of apoplexy. HAWERA. The charge of child murder against Josephine Green was proceeded with yesterday. Detective Benjamin and Constable Manning, of Bulls; Motley, of Woodville; and McNulty, of Foxton, have given evidence. They deposed that they had made exhaustive enquiries, but had been unable to discover anything of Williams, the reputed father of the missing child. Constable Motley, who is postal officer at Woodville, said that no letter had been received there for Williams for twelve montl ■ past, except one a month ago, and that hud not been called for. The case is not finished yet.
