— (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT). DUNEDIN. At the Police Court, Edward Libbets was fiaed £4 10s and costs, for smuggling jewellery. The Dunedin Central Licensing Committee have agreed to extend the licenses to railway refreshment rooms. Mr Wright M.H.R. has replied to the chairman of the harbour board’s telegram as to his (Wright) having said the board’s accounts were crooked, and that he would gladly comply with the request for an enquiry but the work of the session was practically over. Mr Wright adds that boards constituted under the new Act, will be a source of enquiry into the board’s accounts. Mr Ross has replied to Mr Wright, arguing that the data in which the charge was made should be supplied to the Government to enquire into the matter during the recess. AUCKLAND. The charge against Isabella Parry, barmaid, for threatening to shoot Charles M'Gaffie, has been withdrawn, the prosecutor relenting. WANGANJI. A preliminary investigation in connection with the alleged charge of fraudulent insolvency against William Lingard, brewer, was concluded this morning, The defendant now stands committed for trial at the Sup.eme Court on five distinct charges. Three other charges were withdrawn, and the defei d..nt was liberated on bail. INVERCARGILL. At the Supreme Court to-day Harry Wilson was convicted of larceny, and sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, Hugh Bordand for passing a valueless cheque was sentenced to two years hard labor, Bordand is at present undergoing a sentence on a previous charge of false pretences, and has still six weeks to serve. LYELL; Good stone has been struck by the Union Alpine Company in the cross-cut, west from No. 4 level. The reef at present shows a a thickness of two to three feet, and carries a good sample of coarse gold. The general cleaning-up has yielded 173 ounces of retorted gold from 320 tons of stone. This return, though not up to expectation, is profitable.
