RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.—GISBORNE,
[Before J. Booth, Esq., R,M,] Saturday, Sept, Ist. Drunkenness. Hemi Tutoko was brought up, charged with drunkenness, and fined £l. Lunacy. Doctors Pollen and Leggatt appeared before the R.M. to give evidence as to the lunacy of Delia Gannon, now an inmate of the Hospital. Dr. Pollen deposed that Delia Gannon had been in the hospital the last five days, during which time her conduct had been very peculiar. She had been dancing up and down the wards singing all day long, and refused to do anything, even to making her bed. She said she had a gift from the Virgin Mary which released her from the responsibility of all work. He considered her a lunatic unfit to be at large. She required to be placed in an asylum under special treatment. He had made a full report of the case. Dr. Leggat had also examined her. He found her very lucid and quiet on Saturday morning. She said she was exempt by the Virgin Mary from all work for the future. He heard she was noisy and excited at times. She required being put under proper treatment in an asylum. She was a lunatic. He considered her curable. He put in his report of the case. It was understood that she was a stranger in the Bay, and had recently arrived here from Grey mouth on the West Coast. She will be examined by the Magistrate and then committed to the asylum at Napier. _________
