HOSPITAL BALL
A melbiinaby meeting of those interested in the purpose of appointing a committee to make arrangements for the forthcoming Ball in aid of the funds of the Gisborne Hospital, took place last night in the Court House. There was a fair attendance. Mr McKay proposed, and Mr Davis seconded, that His Worship the Mayor take the chair. In reply to His Worship, Mr McKay said he could not undertake the responsibility ot Secretary. Dr. Pollen suggested that there be two secretaries. Mr Davis proposed that Mr Cresswell help Mr McKay in the proposed entertainment. Mr Weston seconded this, which was carried. Mr Cresswell thought it would be better to decide what should be done, whether it would be advisable to have a ball or a concert, Mr Weston proposed that a ball be held. He would do his best to get contributions for the same ; many had already promised to help to the best of their means. The said ball to take place on the 19th of this month. Mr Warren said he would second Mr Weston’s motion, but he thought it would be better to hold it on the 21st inst. Dr Pollen thought, as it would be moonlight, it would be more advisable to hold it on the 21st, especially for the country people. The motion was carried, with the alteration of the date to the 21st instant. Dr Pollen thought that Messrs. Parnell and Boylan’s Hall was the best place to hold the ball. Mr Weston said the charge would be £lO 10s. Mr Boylan had told him so. Dr Pollen moved that Messrs. Weston and Warren interview Messrs. Parnell and Boylan on the matter, and make the best arrangement possible, and report definitely at another meeting. Mr Ingpen seconded the motion, which was carried. Dr Pollen thought the next thing to be done was to form a good committee. He would propose the following gentlemen as a committee—Messrs. Warren, Weston, Winter, Davis, Boylan, Skeet, Crawford, Lewis, Townley, E. K. Brown, W. A' O’Meara, Wallace, J. Cooper, Earam, and E. J. Cook.
The Chairman said, as he had u great deal of the work to perform for the hospital, he would ask to have his name struck out, and have that of Mr Kenny's put in place of it. The motion was therefore seconded, amended and carried. Mr Cresswell said he would like to see the names of the committee published,‘and a meeting called for Wednesday evening. Before going further he would like the price of the tickets fixed. After discussion, the price was put down at 10s. The Chairman considered that the tickets should be initialled by the treasurer of the hospital. Mr Cresswell thought the treasurer of the hospital should act as treasurer for this ball. The Chairman said he had before explained that he had a great deal of other work to do ; but would agree to act as joint treasurer with Mr W. A. O’Meara. After a great deal of discussion, the following gentlemen were appointed to act on the different corn* mittees •— Hall Committee: Messrs Warren and Weston. Invitation Committee : Messrs Warren, Boylan, and Skeet. Decoration Committee; Messrs Winter, Crawford, and Skeet. Catering Committee: Messrs Weston, Davis, Warren, Townley, Cresswell, Boylan, and C. Ward. Mr Warren thought an advertising committee should be formed, as a great deal of money went that way. Dr Pollen thought that the best way would be not to beat them down but to ask them to make a donation. Messrs Weston and O’Meara were appointed to enquire into the prices for printing and advertising. A meeting of the committee was pointed to take place on Wednesday evening next, at the Court House, at half past seven o’clock. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chairman.
