Thursday, August 30. In reply to questions, Ministers said they could not abondon the cause of the Crown against W. Blainey's estate, as there were sureties for £3OO costs due by Brogden and Sons, They could not interfere with the decision of the Te Aroha School Committee not to grant the use of the school house for religious instruction out of school hours. They would not restore lapsed rights of Volunteers to grants of land, Would not give Angelique Therasse any pecuniary compensation for her false imprisonment, as it would establish a dangerous precedent, especially as she had not suffered any pecuniary loss. The natives at Rotorua were quite satisfied with the arrangement for the Government administering their lauds under the Thermal Springs Act. Evening Sitting. The Adulteratior Prevention Bill, Special Powers and Contracts Bill, Middle Island Half-caste Grants Bill, and Patents Bill, were passed through Committee, reported, read a third time and passed. The Public Works Act Amendment Bill, District Railways Act Amendment Bill, Industrial Societies Bill, Inspectors of Machinery Extension Bill, and Harbor Act Amendment Bill were read a second time and committed. In committee the Public Works Act was amended by clauses relating to valuation ef land taken for railway purposes, and to railway offences, being struck out. On the clause, in the Public Works Bill, authorising the Minister of Public Works to grant licenses tor railway refreshment rooms, the committee divided, and the clause was struck out by 26 to 23. The Inspection of Machinery Extension Bill was amended bo as to make Government machinery liable to inspection. The Industrial Societies Bill, Publie Works Act Amendment Bill, Harbor Act Amendment Bill, District Railways Bill, and Road Boards Act Amendment Bill, were reported as amended, read a third time, and passed.
