The Newmarket July meeting began on the 3rd. The race for the July Stakes, for 2-year-olds, was won by Sir K. Willoughbys chestnut filly by Hermit out of Adelaide ; T. DeLagrange’s Archduks 2 ; Leopold de Rothschild’s Talisman, 3. Eight starten. On the 4th, the July Cup wae won by Clarivax ; Eastern Empress, 2 ; Glenallyn, 3d. The Beaufort Stakes were won by Cohort ; Pinacus, 2 ; J. R, Kenne’s Bolero, 3. The betting before the race was 2to 1 against Bolero. On the Sth, the July Handicap wae won by Lord Chamberlain’s colt Chivalry (late Pastiy Cook) ; Sir G. Chetwynd’s Hornpipe, 2;J. R. Keene’s Bolero. 3. Six starters. Chivalry won by a length, Bolero being a bid third. The race for the Kempton Park July Handicap, on the 14th instant, was won by the Duke of Westminister’s colt WhipperIn ; Lord Chamberlain’s Chivalry (late Pastry Cook) 2; Colonel Forester’s Toastmaster, 3, There were 17 starters, including J. R. .Keene’s Golden Gate and Lord Rossmore’s (formerly Lorillard’i) Passaic. At the Great Yarmouth Meeting, July 17th, the race for the Aged Maiden Plate was won by J. R. Keene’s (American) Potosi: Sir J. Syke's Agnes Bentinck, 2; Sir General Codrington’g Chorus, 3. Potosi won by half length. The second summer meeting at Sandown Park began on July 26th. The gieat Kingston two-year-old race was won by Lord Rosalyn’s Silver Sea ; ten started, including P. Lorillard’s Victrix. The race for the Surbition Handicap Plate was was by J. Barnard’s Antler, Sir F. Johnstone’s Exile second. C. Hibbert’s Ariquina third. There were five started, including J. R. Keene’s Potosi. According to Benson’s chronograph Tristag won the Ascot Gold Cup in 4min 58 Lsth sec, Foxhall’s record for the last year being 4min 35sec. In 1881 Robert the Devil’s time was 4min 12sec, in 1880 Isonomy occupied 4min 45sec, and in the preceding year smin 12sec.
