CORRESPONDENCE.

We do not ho’d ourselves responsible for the opinions expressed by our ooirespondentsj. BOROUGH BYE LAWS RE FIRES. (to THE EIIITOR.J Sir,— On Tuesday night last my attention was called to a fire blazing away and sparks flying about, at the rear of Parnell and Boylan’s Hall. Several passers-by strongly objected to the act by remonstrating with the man who occasionally stood by, and on being complained of by several gentlemen .Mr Barnard, who ordered him to make the fire, came eventually on the scene, and told him to “take no notice of outsiders unless the police interfered.” The fact of his so doing would lead one to think he was armed with authority from some responsible person, although acting contrary to the Borough bye laws. Mr Barnard must know that the . fire was not four yards from Mr Bishop's* drug store, and about ten yards from a hay store, with heaps of dry rubbish within a fevy feet of it. The fact of a fire taking place through what he might term accident, but what I bh mid call gross negligence, would not cause auy loss to him, although it would lie ruin to others. I may state that, should a similar act occur there again, which is one of the most crowded parts of the town, I shall make it my business to report the matter to the head office in which the hall is insured, and will also call the attention of the Borough Council to the matter, as there is plenty of vacant space there to build a cook-house if required, and therefore there is no occasion for jeopardising other people's property. —I am, &c. E. P. Joyce.
