BOROUGH COUNCIL.
An extraordinary meeeting of the above was held after the Harbor Board had concluded, the same members being present. Fire-proof Safe. Cr Hepburn stated that Mr Ponsford, the contractor for the erection of the new offices, would, providing any other person obtained the contract for the safe, refuse to allow the work to proceed until he had finished. The Chairman remarked that Cue Council had provided for that, and was not quite at the mercy of Mr Ponsford. Tenders for the erection of the safe were then opened, and were as follows : Ponsford, £6O; Taylor, £B7 10s; Madder, £69 10ft; Hubble, £67 10s. Cr Lewis moved, and Cr Tutchen seconded,! “ That the tender of Mr Ponsford, being the lowest, be accepted.”—Carried. Removal of Firi-enoine Shed. Cr Tutchen said the specifications did not state what sort of wood was to be used for the floor and lining boards. He (thought it very necessary that the wood for these purposes should be well seasoned. Cr Townley moved, “ That the tenders ba opened.’’—Carried. The following tenders were then opened : Ponsford, £6O; File, £O9 10s ; Forbes, £75. Cr Tucker moved and Cr Lewis seconded, “That Mr Ponsford's tender, being the lowest, be accepted. ’’—Carried. Works in Aberdeen Road. The specifications having been read over. Cr Smith wished to anuw how the contractor was to drain the road a cutting of nine or ten feet, as certain ptfta of the road laid In a ffreat hollow. y The engineer said it would not require aa many inches, and he doubted whether th* Chairman of the Public Works Committee knew anything about the matter. Cr Wldnray thought it advisable that It •hould be clearly stated which way the water really was to go. The Chidrinun staled that It w« a matter entirely for the engineer to arrange. The only tender received was that of Mr McDevitt, £7lB 18s (sureties, Dickson and Humphries. Cr Tutchen moved, “That the tender be not. accept* d ” Cr Lewis said the tender was very unsatisfactory, us it did not state any >ime for the c* mpletion <>f the work Cr Townley said ’he most vital objection to the thing was that the Council hud not got the money. Cr Whinray would like to see a quantity of metal brought and kept in depot, ready for use. Mr McDevitt, after obtaining permission to speak, Slid he had only charged the cost of curling the shingle and laying it. He had not taken the forming oi the road into account. It was finally decided not to accept the lender. i
