FIRE ALARM.

Last night, at a quarter to 10 o’clock, the alarm of fire was given by the warning notes of the bi 11. On proceeding to the back of Mr Stubbs’ pr-mises we found the store house dense with smoke. Upon entering and obtaining a light, wo found that a box containing, amongst other things, u linseed oil tin bottle had been the source of the fire, which had, there is little doubt, originated from spontaneous combustion. It appears that the servant maid was making her way upstairs to b -d when she saw the glow of fire through the window, and immediately gave the alarm, when Air Edwards promptly threw several buckets of water on the spot, which had the effect of quenching the fire. There io no room for doubt but what the fire oiiginab-d through the action of linseed oil, which is one of the most dangerous oils known. We were much pleased to see how soon the fire engine was got under way. Directly the bell tolled forth its alarm, the custodian was at the steam-engine, and soon had the fire alight; meanwhile, other persons had arrived at the shed, and in nve minutes after the first toll of the bell, steam was nearly up, and the nose run out as fur as the British Empire Hotel. Messrs. Vennell, Winter, Bullen and others deserve great praise for the way in which they managed the hose. We are pleased to say that very little damage was done.
