A number of people were present and a few scratch matches were subsequently fired. A Whakatane correspondent writes to the “ New 7 Zealand Herald,” Auckland A great loss has occurred in this settlement by the death last month of the Native school master, Mr 8. A. Parker. He was ill from a cold which settled on his luags, and carried him off at the early age of thirty three years, after he had been laid up in his house for a few weeks. Mr Parker came here three years ago from Tologa Bay, where ha had been, for eielit years, teacher of the Native School. In that profession he was highly successful, and obtained the highest approval of his inspectors, and of others qualified to judge. He has left a widow five children who, thanks to their late lamented head’s prudence and foresight, are not left destitute. It is not only as a teacher that Mr Parker’s loss is felt, but in all the relations of life the amiable deceased endeavored to makt himself as servicable to his neighbours as he possibly could. He had made the homoeopathic system of medicine his study, and in the absence of a medical man, was always at the call of the sick and afflicted. It may be added that he was successful iu very many cases attended to by him amongst the afflicted of both races. Great sympathy lias been shown towards his bereaved family who, it is expected, will remain as settlers in our midst. Mr Parker was well known in Panmure, where he was brought, up in his youth, lie. was sometime engaged in press wor k at Napier Mr Parker was well known in this town, and was for some time on Ihe Standard staff, and we sincerely sympathise with his wife in her bereavement.

Mr S. Dolman’s sharp business abilities has been successful in securing the subcontract for carting in the contract for the new wharf contract, which Messrs Wells and Gardiner has obtained.
