THE LATE PUBLIC MEETING,
THE MAYOR AND OCR MEMBER. The following is a copy of the tdfcgran sent by His Worship the Mayor to cur member, Allan Me Donal, Esq., announcing the result of the meeting held in reference to the Native Land Company’s Bill :— “ At a public meeting held last night, the following amendment was carric I :—' That this meeting approves of she pe'ii’on signed hy the settlers of this district against the NewZea'aod Land Settlement Bill now before Parliament.’—E. K. BuoWN. The following reply has been received —: “ To the Mayor of Gisborne—/?<■ your wire in reference to public meeting with regard to Company’s Bill. You can depend I will look out for district I represent, and will take nil responsibility. Only sorry vou di I nut take steps for meeting before I left. Bill does not affect district in any shape or form, as now before the House, same being published and no objection made, long before I loft. I am at a loss what to make of your wire. I am responsible for distrit here. Kindly publish this.—A. McDonald.” In reply to this the Mayor wired Mr McDonald as follows :— “ Rees called the meeting. Was defeated. Am writing full explanation per Cross.” The following telegram was also received this morning :— “ To the Mayor of Gisborne.— Nothing to explain. I have nothing to do with Rees. I will look out for interest of district. Bill does not interfere in any shape or form with my district. Kindly publish this, along with my last, and your own to me. 1 fave wired Herald re same.—A. McDonald.”
