TO THE EDITOR.
Sir,-—A report is current that the “ Herald ” has said there is not any necessity for any further action being taken in a ceitain petition now before the public for signature, aaent a question of vital importance relating to the alienation of Crown lands. Is the opinion of this magnate so infallible that it ventures to assert a prerogative to which it or any other organ has no claim. If the “Herald” is not, it ought to be a vehicle whereby all matters affecting the public interest and welfare be investigated, and therefore on this ground should sink all party feeling, allowing free discussion to both sides as far as its limits will reasonably permit. By what argument soever it has arrived at the foregoing conclusion may not be expressed, yet without an outrage to charity may be fairly guessed. If it seeks to maintain its expression of opinion on technical grounds why afraid to express them, but such as these do not exist. Does it seek to satisfy the enquirer by ambiguities. I would remind them that there is a moral code, written in letters of gold, and fast being impressed on the firmament of advanced intelligence which strictly demands recognition ; nor may any man or body of men, whether individual, sectional or political, however sanctioned by time, precedent or judgffient, violate its precepts.—l am, &c. Equity.
