LAST NIGHT'S WIRES.
(fbom our own correspondent.) GREYMOUTH, Monday. The body of a newly-born child was found on Saturday in High Street, alongside the road. It was wrapped up in calico, four half-crowns being tied in the corner of the calico. At the inquest, evidence showed the child was born alive, and probably died from neglect to the umbilical cord cut by a blunt instrument, and not having been tied heamorahage that ensued had caused death. The jury returned a verdict accordingly, WELLINGTON, Monday. The Supreme Court was occupied on Mon* day in the case of Hunt v. Arthur Gordon, The ca>c will last three days. Much excitement has been caused here to-day re Terawhiti Reef Shares, In the outside mines shares have gone double the prices they were this morning. The Golden Crown sol' 4 freely at 17s 6d. It is rumored that they have struck at eight foot reef. Nobody is allowed to go near the mine till the result of the crushing is known, which tikes place on Thursday next. The last issue of •* Facts ” has caused a little excitement here. Re wires from Gisborne about the criminal information being laid against the proprietor and publisher is looked upon as a dodge to blindfold the members. Re the Native Laud Company’s Bill, the members are not to be gulled by Rees and Company.
DUNEDIN, This Day. The Gaol Commission is sitting at Mount Cook prison, the evidence taken is generally unfavorable to the management of the gaol. Arrangements are being made between the Wellington Meat Export Company and the Union Steam Shipping Coy., to have the smaller of the Company's vessels fitted with freezing chambers, to convey carcases from Blenheim, Nelson, Harder and New Ply* mouth, to Wellington, tor export. James Marshall, President of the Dunedin Jockey Club, died on Saturday. Professor Black, in an analysis of alohollc liquors, seized by the police in Dunedin and country districts, and says that most spirits are considerably under proof, and complains of undue prevalence of table salt in beer, and also of excessive quantities of tannin in brandy. The police intend prosecuting several publicans. The Wains were to-day brought up for sentence, in sentancing the prisoners His Honor uaid he concurred in the verdict which bad been returned, and added that if the prisoners had contemplated the childs death ihey were guilty oi murder, They were each sentenced to seven years penal servitude. CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. Arrangements have been made by the Methodist Union Committe for receiving replies on the subject of the Union from the various church authorities. INVEROARGILL, Monday. A man, named Charles Lewis, s aid to be unsound mind, endeavored to commit suicide by throwing himself across the line on the approach of the Dunedin express. He was caught by the cowcatcher, and on being removed to the hospital, it was found that he had received a bin iso on the back of the neck, which is no! considered dangerous. AUCKLAND, Monday. The Auckland Prospectus of the Frozen Meat and Storage Company will be issued in a few days, there will be 3u,C00 shares of £5 each, making a told capital of £150,000. There will, however, be a first issue of 14,000 shares. Arrangements are being made in England to provide most improved regrigerating machinery.
