ROMAN CATHOLIC SERVICE
On Sunday evening, at the Roman Catholic Church Star <.f the Sea, the learned scholar and divine, the Rev. Theophilus Le Merrant Des Chesnais, S.M., commenced his mission, which will continue throughout the week and terminate on Sunday next. The service was full choral, the Rev. Father Riordan conducting the Vespers, and the choir chanting the responses and other[parts alloted to them, in a highly creditable manner, and with considerable taste. The Church was handsomely decorated, there being four pillars, composed of evergreens, erected round the altar, from which festoons were suspended. A great part of the walls was covered with white, to which flowers in various designs were attached, and these combined with the gorgeous robes of the priest, and the usual display of candles, had a most imposing aspect. The Rev. Divine treated the largo audience to a dissertation on “Humanity,” during the delivery of which he succeeded in securing the unflagging attention of all present. The subject was handled in a masterly style, and we would advise all who desire to hear a more than ordinarily interesting discourse to embrace the opportunity now offered by the presence in our midst of the Rev. Le Merrant De Chesnais. The rev. gentleman conducted several services yesterday, and will continue to do so each day this week.
