RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.—GISBORNE.
[Before J. Booth, Esq., R.M.] Saturday. Vagb.scy. Malcolm McLeod was charged on the information of Constable Wilson with the above offence. After taking the evidence, Hix Worship sentenced the prisoner to one week’s imprisonment, with hard labor. Breach of the Peace. Two young men were charged with this offence by the Police, and were fined 5s and 10s respectively. Yibtirdat. Vagrancy. James Gardiner was brought up and charged, on the information of Mr S. M. Wilson, that he was illegally on his premises on Saturday night last, the 30th instant. S. M Wilson deposed that the prisoner had been in his employ till three weeks back, when he left. I his was the third time he had been on the premises. He was there on Friday night. He (Wilson) had told him the day before that he should desist coming there. On Saturday night witness found him sleeping on the bed in the cottage occupied by the Boots. He had no permission to sleep there. Witne-s then gave him in charge for being unlawfully on the premises Sergeant Bullen stated he took the prisoner in charge on the night in question.
In reply to His Worship, tfie prisoner eaid he had gone there because he had nowhere else to sleep. He had 10s 6d on him, ■ ut the other hotel keepers had refused to give him a ted. He had gone into the cottage to sleep, and not with any dishonest intention. His Worship sentenced him to seven days’ imprisonment. He said he would not add “with hard labor,” as the prisoner was evidently in an unfit state to work He also advised the prisoner to take the pledge, and hoped he would turn over a new leaf.
