“SPICED BEEF.”

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—Following up a letter signed by “Spiced Beef, relative to the entertainment given in aid of the Poverty Bay Hospital, I may say the writer in your paper signing himself “ Spiced Beef,” if not afflicted with a severe attack of cacoaMat 9cribenrli t must have a personal enmity to the editor of the “ Herald.” It was at my suggestion that Master Morgan-Morris sang, as also the services of the other amateurs were secured. The contemptible remarks made by “Spiced Beef” may easily be traced to personal animus and is only the outcome of spleen. It was only by persuasion that the young gentleman was permitted to sing, and I fail to see why an outsider should tike upon himself the task (for I feel certain it is one to him) of scribbling a trashy production, at once vindictive, unmanly, untruthful, and malicious. Per mit me to inform “Spiced Beef” that letters such as his are calculated to prevent amateurs, who without personal gain, willingly and voluntarily give their services in aid of local charities from again doing so.—l am, Ac., John S. Cohen. [We cannot do other than cordially agree with Mr Cohen. The letter above referred to escaped our notice until too late for suppression, and was most certainly an abuse of the privilege we afford to subscribers.— Ed., P.B.S.]
