A SUGGESTION TO THE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir.—At a recent meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Board of Education I notice that a letter was received from the Gisborne School Committee, urging that the school should be raised as the grounds were flooded in the raining season. As the estimated cost was from £9O to £l2O, and there being no funds available the Board decided that they were not in a position to authorise the work. Now there are more ways of killing a dog besides by hanging it, and so there are other ways of preventing the school from being flooded than that of raising the building. Why not lower the street so that the water wottld flow off the section ? It does not require the eye of an experienced engineer to see that sooner or later the Palmerston Road end of Derby Street will have to be taken down considerably to allow the surface water to flow towards its natural outlet, the Taru* heru River. The same remark applies with equal force to other cross streets. In laying off the streets so far the comfort and convenience of householders seems to have been utterly ignored in an insane attempt at keeping the crown of the streets an nearly level as possible, instead of following the natural confirmation of the country. The consequence is that the flood water is thrown back upon private allotments instead of being carried away by what should be the properly constructed water tables. I commend the idea I have suggested to the consideration of the Borough Council before any more money is misspent on so called road formation, and prior to the metal being deposited on the side roads. At any rate something should at once be done to Derby Street, so that the water may not be backed on to the school site and adjoining sections The health of the large number of children attending the school renders the work imperative, and who can be better entrusted with the task of watching over the welfare of the rising generation than our City Fathers ?. I am, Ac., Provident.
