NAPIER STEEPLECHASE MEETING. Tilt Steeplechase Meeting held on Thursday last was most satisfactory in every respect. and it was acknowledged to be the most successful cross-country meeting ever held in the Colony. The weather was glorious, and the attendance very large. The arrangements were highly satisfactory, and reflect the greatest possible credit on the management. The fields were exceptionally large, and thanks to Mr Evitt’s Judicious handicapping, the racing was excellent The first race on the cards was the— Maidkk Steeplechase. P. Martin’s Fashion 1 J. Connolly’s Dhudeen ... ... 2 J. Steven’s Diomedes ... ... 3 —Weha, A.G., Calamity, Heretaunga and Wild Dayrell also ran. Fear Not and Come Again were scratched. Colonel White got the horses away very’ evenly. AG. made the running and maintained the lead to the stone wall where he baulked. Wild Dayrell now led but he was soon passed by Dhudeen, Diomedes and Fashion in the order named ; coming up the straight Fashion led and a grand race now ensued. Heretaunga, who was going well, fell at the last hurdle, leaving Fashion to win by about two lengths. Totatalisator dividend £6 12s.
Ladies Bracelet, Mrs A. M’Lean’s Frederica ... 1 Mrs Nairn’s Buttercup 2 Mrs P. Butler's Quamby ... 3 —Erewhon, Fear Not, Brunetta. Scud, Caffer Grey, Bertie, Joker, Waitai, Notice of Motion, and Aramoho also ran. A capital start was effected for this event, Notice of Motion taking the lead, Frederica coming next close up. At the turn Frederica kioined the leader, aud a grand strugle eusued Frederica, Buttercup and Quamby, coming in in the order named, winniug by half a length. Total£3 18s. Handicap Steeplechase. Clarence ... ... 1 Butler’s Quamby • ... ... 2 Mr Douglas’s Loch Lomond ... 3 —Mount, Ruabine, Reform, Chandler. Lady Bab, Tartaa, Ngatv, Morning Star, Fashion, Wild Dayrell, Scud, Pastime and Calamity also ran. Ruahine got the best of a good start with Ngata, Reform and Mount close up. All the horses cleared the first obstacle, Ruahine having increased the lead, Calamity fell at the stone wall. Ngata now went up to Ruahine and took the lead until LOUI Lomond overhauled him. Chandler ~, ~, 1 Lady Bab 2 Fear Not and A.G. also ran. Chandler won easily from the favorite, Lady Bab, who ran a good race for second place with Fear Not,
