STEAM COMMUNICATION WITH NEW ZEALAND.—ROYAL VISIT TO THE lONIC. On Monday af««*nfon the Prince of Wales paid a visit to the New Zealand Company’s new chartered steamer lonic, Captain E. O Hallett, R.N., lyi”g in the Royal Albert Dock. His Royal Highness, attended by the Hon Tyrwhitt-Wilson, arrived alongside the ship at 4 30 by special train from Liverpool street He was received by Captain Hallett, Mr Coater; Chairman of the New Z-aland Shipping Company, Messrs Studlhylme and Lark worthy, directors, and Mr Strickland London manager of the same company, and Mr T. H. I Ismay, managing director of the Oceanic Steam Navigation Company. The lonic is thd latest addition to the" White Star Line, and has been chartered by the New Zealand Shipping Company to form one of the line of the ■tpamers which they are now despatching from London direct to New Zealand every month. The lonic was built by Messrs Harland and Wolff, of Belfast. She is 440 feet long, 44ft broad, 32ft deep, with a gross registered tonnage of 4573 ; her engines, also manufactured by Mrssrs Harland and Wolff, are of 3,000 horse-power effective. The Prince made a close inspection of the vessel, paying special attention to the engine and refrigerating departments. His Royal Highness congratulated Captain Hallett in having command of so fine a vessel, and one so per fectlv fitted in every particular,—-London Times, April 25.
