WELLINGTON, Monday.
James Lomas, a butcher, committed on Friday, by shooting himself through the head. An was inquest held on SaturMay, when the usual veraict was returned.
A deputation of Chinese residents waited on the Hon Mr Rolleston on Saturday for the purpose of laying before him a statement of the injustice done to their countrymen under the Chinese Immigration Act, which provides for a tax of £lO on Each Chinaman coming to New Zealand without an exemption certificate. Mr McColl acted as spokesman, and pointed out that ie was unfair that Chinese, who assisted to develop the resources of the Colony, should be required to pay the tax a second time, after a visit of a few’ months’ visit to a neighboring colony. He apo stated that a petition was being circulated praying that the tax be rbolished until the Chinese population reached 70()0. Mr Rolleston aromised to enquire into the matter, and the deputation then withdrew’. AUCKLAND, Tuesday.
Charles Browm and John Grapnel! have been further remanded on the charge of Henrickson’s jew ellery robbery. Stevens has been committed for trial, the Magistrate stating the legal questions raised could not be decided in that Court. The defence was reserved. On Sunday night a fire broke out at Hesketh and Aitken’s produce store in Durham street, but was got under by the Fire Brigade. The stock consisted of flax, hay, grass seed, &c. Moran and Co. had a quantity of stock stored in the basement, which was partly damaged by water, but owing to the darkness, the extent is unknown. It is understood all the loss is covered by insurance. The cause is supposed to be spontaneous combustion of the flax. The Blue Ribbon Army hold a great field day in the Theatre Royal on Monday, The Rev, Mr Hobbs, the oldest Wesleyan missionary in Australia, and father of Mr Hobbs, M.H.R., died on Sunday night, in his S4th year. The deceased arrived in New Zealand in 1823. HOKITIKA, Tuesday. The “ West Coast Times ” office was lit with the electric light on Friday evening, but when all the lamps were Jit the light was very unsteady, and unsuited to compositors’ work. It- is intended to get a more powerful engine. NELSON Tuesday, There has been a heavy rainfall since Saturday night, and there are heavy floods iu the Takaka district. The tramway line is damaged,, and the bridge approaches carried away. TIMARU, Tuesday. The Salvation Army commenced operations on Sunday to a large attendance. Steps are being taken to form a Blue Ribbon Army here. Messrs. Robert Gillies, James McDonald, and Wm. A. Mosely were nominated for Bruce, the show of hands were in favor of McDonald. The poll takes place on Friday. The Ringby Football Union have resolved that Otago send a team to Wellington to take part in the tournament in July, provided the Canterbury Union express their w’illingness to play this years fixture between Otago and Canterbury in Wellington.
