In the leading article of our first issue of June 7, we assured our readers that we were “ bound in no way to “ class, party or interest, and that we “ should always aim to be the exposi- “ tor of public opinion, and defender “of all public rights, interest and morals.” This announcement was made in entire good faith Keeping in view our obligation we have found itimeumbent on us to call attention to several instances of venality, and though we have done this in a courteous manner, yet we find that we have made enemies of some who are so blind, and so wrapped up in their own selfishness and conceit, that they fail to see that we are acting in an honourable and unselfish manner, and making self-sacrifices for what will tend to their (as members of a community) own ultimate ben.fit and good. To-day a man may gain by one abuse, to-morrow he xnay lose by another, and in the event of the latter ca«e, he will —when the tables are turned—deeply regret that it had not been remedied in the first instance. In their blindness they fail to see that corruption and venality unchecked is sure to recoil on the perpetrators. I hese arguments are only applicable to the blind and sordid. Thanks be to heaven that uprightness, justi -e, stright forwardness and morality are not utterly extinct in the place • o those who love right, honesty, and freedom, we appeal for countenance and assistance in our arduous endeavour to remedy those evils which tend to destroy confidence, retard progress, pervert justice, and nullify any efforts made for the advancement and future welfare of this promising district.
